What a .msg file is
A .msg is a single message saved out of Outlook. Inside it is not mail but a container of Microsoft properties, which is why most mail clients refuse it even though it clearly contains an email.
The file usually arrives forwarded as an attachment, and it arrives precisely when someone needs to read it: a contract, an invoice, a thread being passed to a lawyer. A message forwarded inside another message is unpacked as well.
