What a .eml file is
An .eml file is a message exactly as it travelled: headers, text and attachments in one plain file. Every mail client can write one, and rather fewer will show you one without importing it into a mailbox first.
These files pile up as exports, evidence and forwarded attachments. Reading one should not require adding an account to a mail program you do not otherwise use.
